For a long time now we have known that there is a thing called Zen. Perhaps the wave of Zen has passed its peak, but it seems to have unsuspected stamina. What, then, has Zen got that the Christian Churches seem helpless to supply? With one voice the Zen people reply, "Experience--a living experience of truth" (37, Zaehner).
The "truth" cannot be put into words; it can only be experienced (37, Zaehner).
The search for meaning is resolved into a wordless "understanding," which is so deep it must be felt not thought (14, Freke). Zen is a living experience of ultimate reality which is open to all irrespective of race, color, or creed. Because you can have Zen Taoists and Zen Catholics (37, Zaehner).
